My opinion?
I gather my thoughts according to my research and share honestly, my opinion as a Christian parent.

How it started... the curiosity that led to the research that led to the curation.

When I first heard about” The King of Kings,” an animated film based on Charles Dickens work “The Life of Our Lord” my ears perked up! As a Christian and a parent I’m always looking for family friendly media I can enjoy with my wife and kids. When the media has a Christian theme then my interest reaches its highest. But alas, we live in a time when appearances aren’t always what they seem on the surface.

So I decided to take it upon myself to look into this Film from a Christian perspective and examine it beyond the trailer to see if it passes the test of Christian integrity, in preserving and honoring our sacred Gospel.   I entered the journey with two questions, who and why? And so it is the journey of exploring these two questions that led me to consolidate my personal research and construct this article.

Who Made the Movie... A Look at the creators, producers, writers and their Christian connection.

As a Christian parent, my first step in embracing "King of Kings" was to understand who was behind the project. Directed by Seong ho "Jay" Jang, the film is a collaborative effort that reflects a deep commitment to Christian values. Jang's vision for the movie was clear from the start: to honor the story of Jesus in a way that feels both authentic and accessible. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jang shared, "We wanted to honor the story of Jesus in a way that feels both authentic and accessible, especially for younger audiences who might not yet have a deep understanding of the Bible." This statement reassured me that the project was not merely a commercial venture but a heartfelt endeavor to convey the Gospel's truth.
Producer Anfernee Kim's involvement further solidified my confidence. Kim emphasized the importance of reverence in the filmmaking process, telling Variety, "Our goal was to create something that respects the source material while also speaking to modern families." Kim's background in faith-based projects, including work with Angel Studios, a company known for its support of Christian content like "The Chosen," was a significant factor. Angel Studios' acquisition of the North American rights to "King of Kings" in November 2024 signaled to me that the film was likely to align with Christian values, given the studio's track record.
The voice cast, featuring luminaries like Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Mark Hamill, also played a crucial role in my decision. Branagh, who voices Charles Dickens, reflected on the project's significance in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: "It's rare to find a project that combines such profound themes with the universal language of animation. This film has the potential to touch hearts across generations." His involvement, along with other respected actors, added a layer of credibility and depth to the storytelling. Additionally, Forest Whitaker's contribution, as another key voice in the film, was notable. Whitaker told The Guardian, "Animation allows us to explore these stories in a way that feels new and exciting, even for those who have heard them countless times before." Their collective commitment to the project underscored its earnest approach.
The film's production was a global effort, with visual effects handled by Animost Studio in Vietnam and post-production at SunJive Studios in Adelaide, Australia. This international collaboration, combined with an American and British voice cast, highlighted the universal appeal of the story while maintaining a focus on Christian integrity. The choice of Charles Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord" as the narrative foundation was particularly appealing, given Dickens' own intent to share the story with his children in a personal and reverent manner. This connection to a respected Christian author further assured me of the project's sincerity.

Why Did It Come Together... Exploring the Reason for the Production and Whether It Preserves the Integrity of the Gospels

Understanding the reason behind "King of Kings" was crucial for me as a Christian parent. The film is based on Charles Dickens' "The Life of Our Lord," a text Dickens wrote for his own children, reflecting a personal and reverent exploration of Christian teachings. This choice of source material was a significant indicator of the film's intent to convey the story with respect and educational purpose. The narrative is framed around Dickens sharing the story of Jesus with his son Walter, a device that strengthens the father-son relationship while conveying Christian teachings. Common Sense Media described this approach as immersing "audiences in the gospel story alongside the curious Walter, creating a viewing experience that feels both fresh and respectful of the source material."
Director Jang's commitment to preserving the integrity of the Gospels was evident in his statements and the film's execution. The animation style, while engaging for children, does not shy away from the profound themes of the Gospel, ensuring that the story remains true to its source. The global box office success of $68.2 million as of June 8, 2025, is a testament to its resonance with audiences, but more importantly, it reflects the hunger within Christian communities for content that honors our faith. The involvement of Angel Studios, known for backing projects that align with Christian values, further reassured me that the film was crafted with integrity.
For me, the critical question was whether "King of Kings" preserves the integrity of the Gospels. My research confirmed that it does. The film's focus on the emotional and awe-inspiring essence of Jesus' life, combined with its respect for the source material, ensures that it remains faithful to the Christian narrative. The animation medium, often underestimated, proves its worth here by making biblical stories visually engaging and emotionally impactful without compromising the message. This earnest approach to storytelling is what makes "King of Kings" a valuable addition to Christian media.

My Opinion as a Christian Parent.... the culmination of my curiosity answered.

As a Christian parent, I approached "King of Kings" with a mix of curiosity and caution, but my research into the film confirmed that it is a project that honors the story of Christ in a way that resonates with our faith. The creators' commitment to authenticity and reverence, combined with the film's alignment with Christian values would  make it a worthwhile addition to any  family library. The animation style, while initially suggesting a focus on children, offers a depth that enriches the spiritual journey of adults as well. Dickens story has become a cherished tool for sparking meaningful family discussions about faith and morality, often revisited during significant religious holidays like Easter and Christmas.
"King of Kings" invites us to rediscover the enduring lessons of the Gospel through the eyes of a child, while also offering adults a chance to reflect on their own faith journey. It stands as a reminder of the power of storytelling done with integrity, and as Christian parents, we should continue to support and celebrate such projects. They not only entertain but also strengthen our families' spiritual foundations, making "King of Kings" a beacon of hope and inspiration in a world that often marginalizes faith-based media.
